M Visa
Business
For commercial and trade activities — trade fairs, supplier visits, meetings, and sourcing trips. The most common visa for Australian sellers visiting factories or attending events like Pet Fair Asia.
X1 / X2 Visa
Student
For studying at a Chinese university or language school. X1 is for courses longer than 6 months (requires a residence permit after arrival); X2 is for shorter courses under 6 months.
Z Visa
Work
For taking up employment in China — including live-in tutoring, teaching, or other roles with a Chinese employer. Requires a work permit before applying, and must be converted to a residence permit within 30 days of arrival.
F Visa
Exchange & visits
For non-commercial exchanges, study tours, internships, or short-term research and cultural visits — good for delegations and group trips that aren't strictly business or tourism.
S1 / S2 Visa
Family of foreign residents
For family members visiting or living with a foreigner who is working or studying in China. S1 is for longer stays (over 180 days); S2 is for shorter visits.
Q1 / Q2 Visa
